Russell back at Honey Run
York County native Carol Russell couldn't be happier to return home as general manager at Honey Run Golf and Country Club. Russell operated the course before, in the mid-'90s, when former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski and York native Ken Kochenour previously owned it.
The tandem has regained ownership of the course, which deteriorated at the hands of the Gotham Golf Group but has seen marked improvement over the last two years under interim owners. "We are all ecstatic to be back again," said Russell, who spent the intervening years at Garrison's Lake, near Dover, Del., and at Lakeview Golf Resort and Spa in West Virginia. "I'm looking forward to working with all of the people and bringing Honey Run back." Russell brings with her another familiar face, that of Dan Weitzel, who will be the course superintendent. Weitzel will work to improve drainage in the bunkers and continue to upgrade the course toward its former high position on the conditioning scale. "It's a fabulous layout," Russell said. Weitzel was the course superintendent at the now-closed Hawk Lake in York. He started at age 12 working for his father at Flying Hills in Reading. Other credits for this Penn State graduate in turf grass science include the Elks Country Club in Boalsburg, Bear Creek in Westminster, Md., and an internship at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem. John Mousley, former first assistant pro at Lakeview, takes over as head pro at the Run and will be able to feature his considerable teaching abilities at the practice facility. |
