Honey Run Buzz

August 1st 2008 -
Notes from the Superintendent:

If you have had the misfortune of landing in our greenside bunkers, you may notice something different, Sand! Our maintenance team has been hard at work installing new sand in the greenside bunkers. Holes 14 and 16 are the only ones left to complete. The sand that was chosen comes from the New Jersey area and is specifically designed for golf course bunkers. We did not take lightly in choosing the right sand for Honey Run. Our new bunker sand meets all specifications set forth by USGA. These specifications include particle size, distribution and shape. Firmness, infiltration rate and the ability to produce a “fried egg lie” are also part of the USGA requirements. Please be patient with the new sand as it takes a while to firm up. Natural rainfall and repeated raking of the surface will settle the sand and firm them up. You won’t be disappointed. Even though your goal is to stay out of the bunkers!

Our next phase in the bunker renovation process is to install internal drainage to the greenside bunkers and add additional sand if needed. This phase will not begin until October and we hope to have drainage installed on at least half the greenside bunkers by the spring of 2009. Weather will be an important factor in how quickly this phase is completed.

Along with the bunker project, we will be solving the problems on #11 fairway. We have already found one internal drain pipe on the fairway. Not only were we able to find this pipe but we were also able to unclog it and allow it to work properly. Our next goal is to find or add additional drain pipe, level and seed low areas to grow it back in.

We have also purchased some new equipment of the golf course. Most importantly we have two new state of the art greens mowers that are equipped with hydraulic leak detection sensors.

With a great supporting cast anchored by my assistant Fred and mechanic Mick we are committed to improve Honey Run on a daily basis. You can help us improve Honey Run by keeping your carts on the cart path at all green and tee locations and fixing your ball marks. With your help and cooperation we can make Honey Run the best public course in the area!
